How Can I Prep My AC Unit For the Summer?

The dog days of summer will be here before you know it. Don't wait until the first scorcher day to find out that your AC unit is not running properly. The following tips will help get you ready for the heat and potentially save you a lot of money! Before doing anything to your unit, be sure to power it off for safety reasons.

  • Check your filters: The air filter in your AC unit should be changed at least twice a year. A dirty air filter recirculates dust in the air of your home and reduces the efficiency of your unit.
  • Inspect the coils of the condenser unit: This part of the AC unit is typically located outside. The coils are typically housed under a grate which helps protect from the elements, however, debris such as leaves can get stuck in the unit's coils. The grille can be removed by taking out the screws and lifting it off the unit. Take care when cleaning the coils as they are prone to bend if not careful. A vacuum can be used to remove debris in and around the unit.
  • Check for debris at the bottom of the condenser unit: Leaves or weeds can clog the unit and disrupt the airflow. Check and tighten any mounting bolts that could be loose and soak up any excess water in the bottom of the unit.
  • Inspect coolant lines: The coolant lines on your unit are typically covered in a protective foam sleeve. If there is any obvious damage to the protective foam, repair or replace the foam insulation.
  • Test your unit before the first hot day of the season: Make an effort to check your a/c unit before the first sweltering day of the season. Once you have inspected and cleaned your unit, be sure it is dry before powering back on.

If you have performed these steps and are still experiencing problems, contact your local HVAC professional for a complete evaluation.
