How to Get the Most Life out of Your Air Conditioner

Clear air conditioning unit

If you own a central air conditioner, chances are you want to ensure it lasts for as long as possible without the need for an ac repair company to come and repair it every year or two. Most AC systems can last upwards of 15 years, provided that they are well maintained with yearly tune-ups. These tune-ups and tests can help to check on the condition of your air conditioning system and its cooling ability. There are plenty of other ways to get the most out of your air conditioning system. Here are just a few of the things you can do, to get the most life out of your air conditioner:

Keep it clean
Cleaning on a regular basis does wonders for extending the life of your AC unit. Dirt, leaves and debris can shorten the life of your AC unit, making your air conditioner work harder; resulting in sky rocketing utility bills.

Keep the outside unit clear
Your outside unit houses your condenser, which is what does the cooling for your home or business. You want to ensure that tall grass does not block this, nor shrubs or other vegetation. You also want to ensure that leaves and other debris will not get into your unit. By doing this you are ensuring that your AC does not have to work harder to keep your home cool. AC services are often called out to fix a problem with an unit only to find out that the inside of the condenser unit is full of leaves and other debris.

Change your air filters often
One of the best things you can do to keep your air conditioning running smoothly is to replace your air filters often. Not doing so makes your AC run inefficiently, and can cause your unit to burn out years ahead of time. If the cost of air filters bothers you, you can buy filters that you can take out and clean. You should replace your air filters once every month, two months at most, during peak operating season.

Schedule regular AC tune-ups
Scheduling regular AC tune-ups will keep small problems from ever developing into larger problems. Like any piece of equipment or machinery, your AC unit needs regular upkeep and maintenance in the form of a yearly tune-up and inspection. The cost of these tune-ups is relatively cheap, usually under $100.
